Slow Food Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is nearing and if you are still planning on attending the Slow Food Thanksgiving Dinner, featuring an American Heritage Turkey (that’s right! We got ASUPS funding approved!!) then you’ll need to reply back. Once we get an idea of how many people are committed to the dinner we can draw up a menu and delegate cooking tasks. For those of you going home for the Holiday, be sure to share slow food ideals with your family and friends—buy local, share recipes, eat sustainably.

Dining and Conference Services is willing to compost pre-consumer waste and the Sustainability Action Committee, along with Students for a Sustainable Campus is seeking our help to make it all happen. SSC meets Mondays at 5pm if you are interested in other sustainable issues on campus. Composting bins and an Earth Tub will be paid for in efforts to compose DCS waste, subject to a financial report approved by President Thomas. As for now, Slow Food is proposing to start small scale composting, mostly our post-consumer waste to use for the garden on campus. If you are interested in seeing this happen, let us know.

Slow Food is also hoping to sponsor a talk by local organic farmers, specifically featuring Terry and Dick of Terry’s Berries and Erick Haakenson of Jubilee Farms in Carnation, WA. The farmers would cover important issues such as the importance of buying local in a globalized market and sustainable farming techniques.

If you are interested in helping coordinate these events or if you have other event ideas, be sure to send us an email. Also, the people at Slow Food USA have proposed setting up an online forum to allow Slow Food Campus Convivia to communicate and share ideas. We’ll let you know once that gets set up.

Cheers,
Diana and Maggie

Here is a good article (slightly dated but still relevant) about heritage turkeys
